The plot of Mass Effect 2

The plot of Mass Effect 2 begins in 2183, not long after the events of Mass Effect. While on patrol for geth, a race of sentient machines, the protagonist Commander Shepard's ship, the Normandy, comes under attack by an unknown assailant. The ship suffers extensive damage, forcing the crew to evacuate in escape pods. Joker, the helmsman, continues to pilot the ship, despite it suffering extensive damage and the rest of the crew evacuating. Shepard drags Joker out of his seat and into an escape pod, but before he can board himself, the Normandy is attacked again, sending him flying and debris slicing through his suit. He suffocates and dies, and his body is seen entering the atmosphere of a planet.

Commander Shepard's body is retrieved by the Shadow Broker, a secretive buyer of information, selling it to the highest bidder, who has been employed by The Collectors, an enigmatic and xenophobic alien race who serve as the game's primary antagonists. In the events of Mass Effect: Redemption, former squadmate Liara T'Soni is employed by Cerberus, a pro-human group, to get the body for the organization, before it is delivered to the Collectors. After this, Cerberus works for two years to rebuild and revive the Commander through a project known as "Lazarus."

Two years later in 2185, Shepard, awakened aboard a Cerberus space station under attack by hacked security mechs, aids Cerberus agents Miranda Lawson and Jacob Taylor in escaping. Shepard is taken to Cerberus' headquarters and granted an audience with the Illusive Man, who explains that Shepard was "upgraded" and asks for the Commander's help in combating a new threat which has been abducting entire human colonies.

Shepard and his team are dispatched to the recently attacked colony of Freedom's Progress in the Terminus Systems to investigate. There, the group encounters Tali, one of Shepard's former squad members, and discovers that the mysterious insect-like Collectors were behind the attack. Shepard reports this to the Illusive Man, who then places Shepard in command of the Normandy SR-2, a larger ship modeled after the original Normandy SR-1. With the guidance of the Illusive Man, Shepard begins traveling across the galaxy to recruit a new team to uncover the Collectors' plan.

The Illusive Man initially provides Shepard with four dossiers on four potential recruits: a Salarian scientist, a Krogan warlord, a mysterious vigilante called Archangel and a powerful but psychotic biotic. The Salarian scientist, Mordin, is found on Omega, working to stop a plague engineered by the Collectors. The Krogan warlord, Okeer, has been attempting to create the perfect Krogan through unethical genetic research; when the warlord is killed, he leaves his creation, Grunt, to Shepard. The vigilante Archangel is also on Omega, holding out on his own against three mercenary gangs. After reaching his hideout, it is revealed that he is actually Garrus Vakarian, one of Shepard's previous squad members. Garrus is seriously injured while battling the mercenaries, and while he is permanently disfigured he survives and joins the team. The biotic, Jack, is a woman also known as "Subject Zero." Cerberus arranges for her to be purchased from the prison holding her; instead, the warden attempts to capture Shepard but they escape the trap and she joins the team.

The Illusive Man then reveals that a human colony called Horizon has come under Collector attack, and he dispatches the team to attempt to save the colony. He also notes that one of Shepard's surviving crew members (either Kaidan Alenko or Ashley Williams, depending on choices made in the first game) is at the colony. Shephard arrives with his team and battles the Collectors face-to-face; while they are too late to save most of the colonists, he is reunited with his former ally. They feel betrayed by Shepard working for Cerberus and the meeting goes poorly.

After returning to the Normandy, the Illusive Man provides Shepard with three more potential recruits: an Asari Justicar, a Drell assassin, and Tali. Shepard finds the Justicar, Samara, on Illium. She has sworn herself to finding and destroying an Ardat-Yakshi, an extremely dangerous mutated asari. Once Shepard finds information on where her quarry has fled to, she joins the team. The Drell assassin, Thane, is also on Illium and is in the midst of an assassination mission. Shepard works with local law enforcement to gain entry to the site of the mission, and after fighting his way to the top floor he encounters Thane shortly after he dispatches his target. Thane then joins the team, as Shepard can provide him with a purpose. Tali is found on a Geth-occupied Quarian colony world, where she is researching the system's rapidly dying sun. After rescuing her from an immense Geth force, she comes with Shepard.

The Illusive Man then reveals that the Omega-4 relay - beyond which lays the Collector base - requires a piece of Reaper technology to operate. Cerberus had located a derelict Reaper, evidently destroyed millions of years prior, and sent a science team there to recover the required device - an IFF friend/foe identifier. Shepard investigates and finds a Cerberus science team turned into Husks. There is also a Geth on board, who aids them from afar as Shepard fights his way to the core of the Reaper ship. After recovering the IFF, Shepard destroys the core and salvages the damaged Geth. Shepard can either turn the Geth over to Cerberus for research, or activate it to use for the mission. If activated, the Geth will be identified as Legion.

Shortly after, Shepard departs with his team on a shuttle. In his absence, Collectors ambush the Normandy and board it. Joker is forced to give control of the ship over to its onboard AI, EDI - a potentially dangerous move. After successfully doing so, EDI manages to pilot the Normandy away from the Collectors, but the entire crew aside from Joker is taken. After returning to the ship, Shepard's hand is forced - he can either continue doing secondary missions and sacrifice his captured crew, or he can go through the Omega-4 relay immediately to rescue the Normandy crew members.

After going through the relay, the game can proceed in several ways. Depending on whether or not Shepard quickly enters the Omega-4 relay, has or has not upgraded parts of the Normandy, and has earned the the loyalty or disloyalty of team members, any combination of crew and team may survive or perish during the final mission. Regardless, Shepard fights his way to the core of the Collector space station. There Shepard discovers that they are growing a new Reaper, made from the genetic material of the abducted humans and fused with the advanced technology of the Reapers. Though it is only in the early stages of construction, it comes to life and attacks Shepard and his party. After destroying the Reaper, Shepard prepares to overload the core of the Collector base.

At this point, he is contacted by the Illusive Man who suggests that they keep the station to research its technology, under the pretense it could be valuable in the coming war against the Reapers. Shepard can either destroy the station, or use a radiation pulse to kill all the surviving Collectors, opening the way for Cerberus to take control of the station. After making a decision, the surviving squad members escape on the Normandy. A final cinematic reveals the Reaper fleet approaching the galaxy from dark space, apparently having awoken on their own after the events of the first Mass Effect.

Mass Effect 2 is the sequel to BioWare's hit space-based role-playing game (RPG), Mass Effect. A single player adventure, Mass Effect 2 allows players to continue the adventures of the fully customizable series hero Commander Shepard, as you take on a whole new adventure and a new cast of supporting characters. Additional new features include the ability to import game save files from the original Mass Effect game to continue the adventure in an unbroken fashion, a new damage system, a new, more flexible dialogue game mechanic and more.

Gameplay

An space-based action RPG like its predecessor, gameplay in Mass Effect 2 revolves around the player's particular version of Commander Shepard and continuing development of this character as the game proceeds. As the game opens a variety of character classes are made available to the player, with talents, both exclusive and general, associated with each. With experience these talents are leveled up, resulting in the unlocking of related abilities and/or entirely new talents. The player has the ability to customize their Commander Shepard in a number of ways including physical appearance, gender, and certain aspects of their personal history, with the rub being that these choices can influence things like available missions, dialogue choices with non-player characters (NPCs), and character background.

Accompanying this main character are a number of preset supporting characters that the player can direct and develop relationships with, which again, will alter the outcome of the story. All the characters from the original game make an appearance in Mass Effect 2, but the immediate characters surrounding Commander Shepard are new. Additional new features that players can expect to experience include new alien races, a more realistic damage system, a new heavy weapons system allowing for maximum damage, a regenerative health system, a dramatic increase in the number of character animations available to Shepard, and updates to the dialogue mechanic used when conversing with NPCs.
